A simple three stage model for working with anger issues including building emotional awareness in body and mind; understanding the meaning and roots of anger, and its created purpose in a fallen world; and usefully harnessing its energy. This approach is intended to be a more consistent Christian approach to working with client’s anger issues that looks beyond just "anger management". The approach attempts to include all aspects of people - rational, emotional, behavioural and spiritual.
Four Workshops on Language, Purpose and Technology
Jeff Rutter
BA (Hons), MTS, PsyD, MAPS
Workshop: ‘The Words and the Music of Christian Counselling’
Dr. Rutter is a clinical psychologist, lecturer in the graduate department of counselling and director of the Student Counselling Centre at Wesley Institute.
His areas of interest include metaphorical aspects of counselling and client change processes, the intersection of psychology and spirituality, and the psychology of the artist. The Christian tradition is rich in poetic and symbolic material, and ancient Jewish and Christian peoples once deemed the expression of anything in poetic form as an indication that it must have been quite important and worthy of serious attention. How far we have strayed! Western psychology now privileges the literal, and more than a few mental health professionals consider the use of metaphor and other imaginative resources in the consulting room to be “fluffy” and non-empirical at best. We will set about challenging that perspective and having fun in doing so by examining the tension between the literal and the figurative in the modern world, the tension between the literal and the figurative in Christianity and the demands and the delights of taking a more explicitly imaginative approach to Christian counselling.
Nicolette Deva
M.Ed(Psych)., Grad.Dip.Psych., Grad.Dip.Ed., B.Sc. Assoc MAPS.
Workshop: ’The Alternate Story’
Nicolette is a psychologist and has worked with communities, young adults, adolescents and children in counseling and training roles for the past 16 years. She currently works in private practice at Life Medical Clinic in Waterloo and at the Hillsong CityCare Health Centre in Castle Hill.
When people consult counselors or psychologists they frequently relate stories. Many of these stories are of problems and concerns they are struggling with. They also relate other stories - ones that are often neglected, barely visible and often unheard. These are the alternate stories – the stories of intentions, purposes, dreams and values. Narrative therapy proposes that as “these alternate story lines thicken and become more firmly rooted in history, they provide people with a foundation for new initiatives in addressing problems, predicaments and dilemmas in their lives” (Michael White). This interactive workshop will introduce you to a set of skills and principles that will help you to develop alternate stories with your clients. During this workshop, you will be able to see a practical demonstration of alternate story development, as well as have the opportunity to practice some of the skills involved.
Richard Morrison
