Doug Sotheren
Doug Sotheren (B.A., M.Th., Dip. R.E., AARC., CCA.) first trained as a marriage counsellor in 1970 - 1973. He has undertaken further training in Gestalt, Family and Somatic Therapy. For eight years he operated a counselling centre in Western Sydney and then was involved in the creation of the LifeCare Counselling Service in Sydney. He has been training Counsellors and leading intensive workshops since 1975.
His experience includes over 27,000 hours of counselling and thousands of hours of group training in the field of personal and marital counselling. He is in private practice as a counsellor/clinical supervisor, and human relations' trainer on the Central Coast. He has acted as consultant for various agencies and Government departments in the areas of counselling, grief, and family dynamics. His current practice includes counselling, training in Body focused and couple counselling and clinical supervision for both individuals and groups in government and non-government organisations.

Phil Henry, Principal of Making the Difference Counselling and Consulting (MTD), has been building a successful practice for the last eight years.  MTD now has a team of six practitioners who offer a wide variety of counselling modalities.  Initial Questions relate to:

  • What do I need to set up a practice?
  • Where can I get good referrals from?
  • How can I talk confidently and easily about the work I do?
  • How can I make my practice stand out from all of the others?
  • What can I do to attract more of my ideal clients?
  • What is marketing and why is it important for my business success?

Specific issues which will be covered:

  • Why start a Counselling Practice anyway?
  • Setup – getting started (Business Name, ABN, Banking, Accounting, GST)
  • Budgeting – a good Accounting package is necessary
  • Marketing / Advertising (Website, Newsletters, Yellow Pages Direct)
  • Keeping in touch – finding appropriate ways to maintain your client base
  • Referrals – the importance of increasing profitability
  • Networking – the need to have a good contact base
  • Mentoring – possible personnel growth within your practice
  • Ongoing education and professional development
  • Developing other avenues of income

This Professional development event is directed towards Counsellors, Therapists, Students and other service providers interested in private practice.  Counsellors currently in private practice will learn the latest strategies for attracting clients and increasing their business.

David Lawson
David is a Financial Counsellor with Lifeline Bundaberg and has been on the executive of the Financial Counsellors Association of Queensland for two years. He is the Queensland representative for The Australian Financial Counsellors and Credit Reform Association and is a member of the Consumer Advisory Committee to the Queensland Competition Authority.

Have a client with money issues or concerns?

  • What do I do with them?
  • Can someone take the baby’s pram as payment for a debt?
  • What is bankruptcy?
  • How to deal with CSA and Centrelink.
  • How long can I keep running from my creditors?

You will go away with answers to these and other tips (and traps) and also information on where to find a Financial Counsellor. Questions will be taken from the floor.
