Doug Taylor has been the Manager of The Salvation Army Counselling Service for 16 years. He has 36 years experience in pastoral / community counselling. Doug’s prime focuses include: Dealing with Destructive Relationships; Helping individuals / families deal with Abuse Issues (Victims and Offenders). Doug provides Supervision (Clinical and Pastoral). Doug has been an Educator / Trainer for over 30 years teaching in churches, community settings and Universities.

Speaker:

Ann Crawford is a Counsellor / Educator / Supervisor holding significant roles at the Christian Outreach Centre (Citipointe). As well as completing her Ph.D, Ann teaches Pastoral Care subjects at Citipointe Ministry College, and Christian Heritage College. As a Counsellor, Ann counsels in relationship issues, couples and singles, with a focus on establishing identity and interdependence.

Session Overview:

The aim of this workshop is to highlight important ethical issues related to professional practice in counselling. Discussion will take place on the following:

  • Ethics of professional practice will be reviewed (CCAA / PACFA Codes of Ethics).
  • Primary moral principles which underpin ethical behaviour will be considered and discussed.
  • Issues related to the work of the professional counsellor including interviewing, report writing, record keeping and access, mandatory reporting and case preparation.
  • Supervision.

Sr Kathleen Mooney & Loris Henry

Sr. Kathleen Mooney has worked with children for thirty years, firstly as teacher, then principal and now in a primary school as school counsellor and at MacKwood Life where Sr Kathleen counsels children and adults - many of who are suffering from grief and loss issues.

Loris Henry is both a School Counsellor and a therapist / practitioner within her own counselling practice - Making the Difference Counselling and Consulting Loris is committed to supporting children and families through times of grief, stress and difficulty.

Session Overview

This workshop aims to enhance skills and knowledge of grief and loss, bereavement theory and related counselling interventions. It will engender appreciation of the unique experience and expression of grief and mourning with regard to the personal, family, social and cultural context. The key issues will centre around:

  • The symptoms and stages of grief
  • The tasks of those who grieve
  • How children grieve – dealing with death and loss
  • Children and parental separation issues
  • Helpful therapeutic strategies and interventions

As well as being the Queensland President of CCAA (Q) Inc. and the National Secretary of CCAA Inc., Phil is currently a sessional lecturer at two Universities (CHC and ACU)

Much of counselling and welfare work focuses on relationships. Those in people helping professions, therefore, must have an understanding of supervision theories and skills that undergird the counselling process. This supervision workshop focuses specifically on the issues which counsellors commonly face at both theoretical and practical levels. Speaker:

Pat McCaul provides counselling, mediation and clinical supervision in private practice and also has significant clinical experience in agency settings. She currently coordinates counselling services for Centacare (Brisbane). Pat’s qualifications are in Social Science, with specialised training in Mediation and registration with the Attorney General’s Department to provide Family Dispute Resolution for families in the process of separation.

Mediation is a process in which a trained facilitator assists people to identify areas of disagreement and then to work collaboratively together to resolve disputes and make decisions acceptable to all parties. Mediation is applicable to relationships, immediate and extended family settings, workplace issues, neighbourhood and community disputes, and to government and global contexts.

This introductory workshop aims to provide participants with a basic knowledge base about Mediation generally and an appreciation for the role of the Mediator as a process manager in assisting people to explore the content of disagreements in a productive manner.
